When the chief physician refused to help a homeless man who had been brought to the hospital with cardiac arrest, a simple cleaning woman saved his life — but she had no idea who this man really was or what had actually happened to him 

Two teenagers ran into the emergency room. They dragged in a man wearing dirty, soaking-wet clothes. He smelled of alcohol and dampness. His face was dark, almost blue, his lips were bluish, his eyes rolled back. He wasn’t breathing properly — only rare, ragged gasps came from his throat. The teenagers dropped him right onto the tiled floor and disappeared.

The man lay motionless.

The surgeon on duty glanced at him briefly and went back to his phone.

— They’ve brought in another bum. Call security, have them throw him out.

The cleaning woman Eva stood nearby with a mop in her hands and couldn’t take her eyes off him. She saw the swollen veins in his neck, the strangely displaced Adam’s apple, the asymmetry of his chest. The man’s heart was barely working. It was a clear cardiac arrest.

The body on the floor suddenly jerked, the man arched, his face turned almost black. The gasping stopped completely.

Eva didn’t think. She dropped the mop, rushed to the desk, and grabbed a bright yellow utility knife. She cut open the dirty shirt, placed her palms on his chest, and began chest compressions. Hard, rhythmic, without stopping. She counted silently, afraid to lose the rhythm.
