In the summer of 2020, Maggie and Dom Altobelli were overjoyed to learn they were expecting twins. But that joy quickly turned to concern: the babies were conjoined.

The girls shared several vital organs — a rare condition known as thoraco-omphalopagus.

When Addison and Lilianna were born on November 18, 2020, the family was already under the care of specialists at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia — one of the few hospitals in the U.S. equipped to handle such complex cases.

The Altobellis moved to another city to be closer to the medical team and to give the girls the best care possible.

The twins spent nearly a year in intensive care. Their bodies were joined at the chest and abdomen, sharing a liver, diaphragm, chest wall, and abdominal wall.

Doctors prepared carefully for the separation surgery — an extremely complex procedure where even the smallest mistake could cost both children their lives.

Exactly one year after their birth, the unique surgery took place. It lasted many hours and was a success. Eddie and Lili were given the chance to live separate, independent lives.

After surgery, both girls remained under close observation and received tracheostomy tubes to help them breathe. But doctors are confident that their breathing will normalize over time and the tubes will no longer be needed.

Despite everything they had been through, the girls adapted quickly to life apart. Eddie and Lili amazed everyone with how fast they progressed — shortly after separation they began crawling, and a few months later they took their first steps.

Now, nearly four years after the surgery, Eddie and Lili are active, joyful, and incredibly charming girls.

Their journey wasn’t easy, but thanks to their family’s love, the doctors’ dedication, and their own strength of spirit, they overcame what once seemed impossible.
