The billionaire pretended to be asleep to test the maid’s son and was sure the boy would steal his money, but what the child did filled the billionaire with true horror 

The billionaire was sitting in his favorite armchair by the fireplace, eyes closed, breathing evenly. From the outside, it looked as if he were sleeping soundly. In reality, he had not closed his eyes for a single second. He heard every sound and was fully alert.

With age, he had become suspicious. Money was disappearing from the house. Small amounts, but regularly. He noticed it immediately, but there was no proof. Suspicion fell on the staff. Over his long life, the billionaire had grown used to believing that if you give a person an opportunity, they will eventually steal from you—especially if they think no one is watching.

This time he decided to check everything himself, because after the arrival of the new maid and her son, money had begun to disappear from the house.

On the small table next to the armchair, he deliberately left a bundle of cash. The bills lay in plain sight, as if he had forgotten them out of carelessness. A little farther away, in the wall, the safe stood open. Inside lay neatly arranged gold bars, illuminated by the soft light of a lamp. The maid quietly entered the room. She had been working there only a short time and always looked tired. The billionaire knew that she was raising her son alone and barely making ends meet. The boy entered behind her—small, thin, with a serious expression.

“Sit here and don’t touch anything,” the maid whispered, trying to sound calm, though her voice was trembling. “The master is sleeping. If you wake him, I’ll lose my job.”

“I understand, Mom,” the boy replied softly.

The maid left. The door closed. Only the billionaire and the maid’s son remained in the room.

Several minutes passed. The billionaire expected the boy to reach for the money or the safe right away. He was certain that was what would happen. But the boy stood still, as if afraid to take a single step.

After that, the boy carefully put the gold back, closed the safe, and turned toward the armchair. He noticed that the billionaire was not fully covered, stepped closer, and, just as his mother had taught him, gently covered him with a blanket.

“Good night, sir,” he said quietly and stepped back.

At that moment, the billionaire opened his eyes. He looked at the boy and felt ashamed of his thoughts. He realized how wrong he had been to believe that honesty depends on age or poverty.

The next day, he fully paid for the boy’s education and helped his mother with money she would never have dared to ask for.

And for the first time in many years, the billionaire understood that you cannot judge people by their clothes. And that all this time, it had been his own son—who had lived his entire life in comfort—who had been stealing from him.
