I spent $15,000 on my sister Emma’s dream bachelorette trip to Italy last year. I wanted her to have something truly special before her wedding, so I paid for everything—flights, hotels, activities, all of it. She kept telling me how lucky she was to have me and how she would never forget what I did.

Fast forward to my wedding last month.

Emma arrived wearing a white dress. The moment I saw her walk in, my stomach dropped. Still, I chose not to say a word because I didn’t want any drama on my wedding day. But then, during my speech, she stepped up, grabbed the microphone out of my hand, and announced she was pregnant. Instantly, everyone’s attention shifted to her. I wanted to scream, but instead I hugged her, smiled, and said, “Congratulations.”

The next morning, though, I sent her a message—still calmly—asking her to reimburse the $15,000 I spent on her bachelorette trip. I wrote, “Since you feel we aren’t close enough for you to respect my wedding day, then maybe I’m not the right person to fund your celebrations. A payment plan is fine.”

She called me crying, insisting I was being cruel and petty. She said she never meant to upset me and genuinely thought I would be happy about her announcement. Our parents are furious with me, claiming I’m punishing her for being pregnant and that asking for reimbursement was tacky and ruined her happiness.

Some friends say she intentionally overshadowed my wedding and that she deserved consequences. Others believe I should have spoken to her privately instead of demanding the money back. The truth is, I don’t actually expect her to pay me—I only wanted her to understand that actions have consequences.

Now my family is completely divided, and everyone is angry.
