For several days straight, a little girl kept showing up at my front door, standing there for a few minutes before running away. I grew worried for her safety so I decided to find her parents and discovered something I never predicted.

Almost every day, right at noon, the same child would appear on my porch. She was adorable – round cheeks, neat little braids, a clean dress, and a small teddy bear clutched in her arms.

She would stand still, dealing with the doorbell camera, staring directly into it as if she were waiting for someone to answer.

Usually, I was at work during that hour, so I couldn’t go to the door or ask who she was. Each time, it occured the same way: she rang the bell, waited a minute or two, and dashed off down the street.

No car. No adult in sight.

Each day it annoyed me more. Why was a young child rambling around alone? Where were her parents?

The thought that something might be wrong started to eat at me.

One evening, after watching another video of her brief visit, I decided to take the recordings to the police. They acted quickly within hours, they found out who the girl was and called in her mother. And that’s when the mystery took an amazing turn.

When the woman came in and heard the report, she unexpectedly burst out laughing.

“Oh goodness,” she said between giggles, “my daughter’s just at that curious age. We live nearby, and she loves walking past your house. Every time we do, she insists, ‘I want to say hi to that lady!’ She runs up to your door, rings the bell, and then runs back. I’m always waiting for her by the corner.”

I couldn’t believe it.

“But… why me?” I asked, still littered.

The woman smiled excitedly.

“You might not remember,” she said, “but one summer, my daughter tripped and fell in front of your house. You helped her up and gave her an apple. Ever since then, she’s wanted to come back and wish you a good day.”

The police sergeant and I looked at each other and then we both began laughing.

So, the “mysterious little visitor” I’d been worrying about wasn’t in trouble at all. She was simply a sweet child trying to return a small act of kindness – one cheerful hello at a time.
