Cops Warn of Dangerous New Prank Targeting Walmart Shoppers

Local police departments across several states are warning the public about a new and potentially dangerous prank happening in Walmart parking lots — and it’s catching innocent shoppers off guard.

What seems like a harmless joke is actually leading to disturbing encounters, property damage, and even safety risks. Authorities are urging everyone who shops at large retail stores — especially Walmart — to stay alert.

What’s Happening

According to reports, pranksters are targeting unsuspecting shoppers as they load their groceries or return their carts. The trick often starts with someone distracting a customer — sometimes by “accidentally” bumping their cart or asking for help with directions.

While the shopper is distracted, a second person might attach strange objects to their vehicle — like zip-tied bottles, small GPS trackers, or even fake notes claiming “you hit my car.”

When the driver notices and gets out to check, the pranksters use that moment to record their reactions for social media or worse — attempt theft or confrontation.

Police Response

Law enforcement agencies are calling the trend “reckless and dangerous.”

“It’s not just a prank — it’s harassment, and it’s illegal,” one police spokesperson said. “People don’t realize that distracting someone in a parking lot, even for a joke, can lead to serious consequences.”

Some incidents have even resulted in minor injuries when startled shoppers tried to confront the pranksters.

What Shoppers Should Do

Police recommend a few key safety tips:

  • 🚗 Stay aware of your surroundings, especially near your vehicle.
  • 📱 Don’t engage with strangers who approach you unexpectedly in parking lots.
  • 🔒 Lock your doors immediately once you’re inside your car.
  • 🚨 If you notice anything suspicious, report it to store security or local authorities.

Social Media Gone Too Far

Experts believe the trend stems from social media “challenge culture,” where people compete to film outrageous pranks for likes and views.

“The problem,” says psychologist Dr. Emily Hanes, “is that when you turn public spaces into a stage, you forget that real people — not actors — are involved.”

While the prank might seem like a joke to some, police say it’s only funny until someone gets hurt.

So the next time you shop at Walmart, keep your eyes open — and your phone in your pocket, not filming someone’s misery for clicks.

Because some jokes… just go too far.
