At Christmas, my daughter-in-law said: ‘We’re doing Christmas at my mom’s. You can stay home.’

I smiled back, feeling a little shy, yet invigorated by the spontaneity of it all. “Heading out,” I replied, the words tasting sweet on my tongue. “I’m Linda, by the way.”

“David,” he offered, extending his hand. “First time traveling alone?”

“Well, first time in a long while,” I admitted, shaking his hand. I felt a warmth in his grip, a kind of reassurance that I hadn’t felt in a while. As the plane began to taxi, I noticed the excitement bubbling in my chest. It felt liberating.

David and I chatted as the plane took off, and the world below became a tapestry of clouds and sky. He was a retired history professor, traveling to visit old friends in Germany. We shared stories about our families, our lives, and our dreams. For the first time in what felt like forever, I was sharing my own story, not just listening to someone else’s.

When the flight attendant announced that it was time to fasten our seatbelts, I couldn’t help but chuckle quietly. “I guess I’m venturing into the unknown,” I said, half to David and half to myself. It felt like I was shedding an old skin.

As we flew over the Atlantic, the hours seemed to melt away. David and I discussed everything from politics to our favorite books, and at one point, he even managed to make me laugh until tears welled up in my eyes. For someone I had just met, his presence felt like an old friend.

When the plane finally touched down in Germany, I felt a surge of exhilaration. The air was crisp and cold as we stepped off the plane, a perfect contrast to the warmth of the airport. We waved goodbye at customs, promising to keep in touch, and with his parting words, David said something that stayed with me.

“You’ve got a sparkle in your eyes, Linda. I hope you find whatever it is you’re looking for.”

With a smile and a nod, we went our separate ways. I walked through the airport, my suitcase rolling behind me. The chatter of travelers and the bustling energy of the place filled me with a sense of possibility.

That evening, as I settled into my hotel room, I took a moment to reflect. The twinkling lights of the city outside my window seemed to mirror the newfound lightness within me. I realized that this journey was more than just a holiday getaway. It was a much-needed departure from the confines of my old life, a chance to explore the world and, in turn, myself.

Christmas day arrived with its own magic. I found myself walking through a small, snow-kissed German village, the air filled with the aroma of gingerbread and mulled wine. Strangers greeted me with “Frohe Weihnachten” as I passed, their smiles warming the cold air. As I wandered through the festive markets, I realized I was creating new memories—ones that were all my own.

As the bells tolled in the distance, I stood in the heart of the square, a gentle snow falling around me. For the first time in years, I felt truly at peace, knowing I had given myself the best Christmas gift of all: the courage to start anew and embrace the adventures that awaited.
