A young man snatched a piece of bread from a homeless man’s hands, threw it on the ground, and began stomping on it with his feet: all the witnesses were shocked by the young man’s behavior, but soon something unexpected happened
A narrow city street stretched between old brick buildings. Near the garbage containers stood an elderly homeless man wearing a dirty jacket and a worn-out hat. Next to him sat his dog — a large white mixed-breed that had barely eaten anything for several days.
The last few days had been especially hard. The man and his dog wandered through courtyards and alleys, looked into trash containers, and tried to find at least something edible. Sometimes they found food scraps, sometimes nothing at all. They ate cold leftovers, stale pieces, dirty food that an ordinary person wouldn’t even touch. But when hunger tightens the stomach, a person stops being picky.
That day luck suddenly smiled at him. In one of the containers he noticed almost a whole loaf of bread. The bread looked fresh, as if it had been thrown away only recently. The man carefully picked it up, brushed the dirt off, and looked at his find for a long time.
He sighed quietly and shook his head.
“People don’t even understand what they throw away…” he muttered to himself.
He thought that those people had probably never been in a situation where an ordinary piece of bread feels like a real treasure.
The man carefully broke the bread into two pieces. He handed one piece to the dog. The dog gently took it in its teeth and immediately began to eat. The second piece the man intended to eat himself. He had already raised the bread to his lips when suddenly he heard quick footsteps beside him.
A young man in a military uniform approached.
Without saying a word, he sharply snatched the bread from the homeless man’s hands. Then he threw it onto the wet asphalt and began roughly stomping on it with his heavy boots.
People on the street froze. Some stopped near the entrance of a shop, others simply stood on the sidewalk watching what was happening.
The man did not understand what was going on. He looked at the soldier with wide eyes.
“Why…” he said quietly.
But the young man said nothing and continued crushing the bread under his boots until only wet crumbs remained.
The dog stepped aside and began to whine softly, as if it too felt the injustice of the scene.
People around them began whispering.
“What is he doing?”
“Why humiliate a man like that?”
“He already has nothing…”
The homeless man lowered his head. At that moment he felt not so much hunger as bitterness. It seemed to him that the world had finally become cruel and cold.
And then the young man did something that shocked the entire street Continued in the first comment
But suddenly the young man stopped. He looked at the man and calmly said:
“Wait here. Don’t go anywhere.”
After those words he turned around and quickly walked toward the nearest store on the corner of the street.
People looked at each other, not understanding what was happening. A few minutes passed. And suddenly the young soldier appeared again from the store. In his hands he carried two large bags.
He approached the homeless man and handed him the bags.
“There’s food here for you and for your dog. And warm clothes.”
The man looked at him in confusion, not understanding why he had acted so cruelly at first.
The soldier sighed slightly and quietly added:
“I accidentally overheard the owner of the bakery talking to the clerk. During the night a rat got into their shop and ran over all the baked goods. They were going to throw this bread away. It could have been contaminated.”
The man slowly lowered his gaze to the bags. Inside were fresh groceries, canned food, several loaves of bread, and a large bag of dog food. On top was a neatly folded warm jacket.
He looked up again, but the young man was already walking away down the street.
The soldier did not turn around and said nothing more.
