When Halima Cissé found out she was pregnant, she had no idea how extraordinary her journey would be. After initial scans, doctors first suspected triplets, then five babies.

But to the entire medical team’s great surprise, she carried and gave birth to nine babies — five girls and four boys.

The babies were born prematurely at 30 weeks of pregnancy. Each of them weighed between 500 grams and one kilogram — so tiny they could fit in the palm of a hand.

All nine newborns were immediately placed in intensive care, where experienced doctors and nurses monitored them around the clock.

They were fed every two hours and examined every three. Each day, they went through six liters of baby formula and up to one hundred diapers.

They spent several months in incubators, slowly gaining weight and strength. No one could say for sure whether all would survive. But then a miracle happened.

And now, four years later, they are healthy, happy boys and girls — full of energy and laughter.

The Cissé family made history as the first in the world where all nine babies born at once survived. It’s a triumph of medicine, love, and the human spirit.

On May 4, 2025, the children celebrated their fourth birthday in grand style. A party was held at a hotel in Mali’s capital, Bamako.

The guests had already gathered when the birthday stars entered the hall. The girls wore white puffy dresses with pink bows in their curly hair, while the boys were dressed in grey suits with vests and burgundy bow ties.
