A man spent hours at the neighbor’s apartment: one day, his wife decided to follow him, convinced he was cheating on her: But what she saw there turned out to be a true shock 

Over the past month, her husband had changed. Once cheerful and talkative, he had become withdrawn and silent. He avoided conversations, claimed to “stay late at work,” even though his wife knew he had recently been fired from the hospital where he worked as a surgeon.

She tried to excuse him: fatigue, stress… But her heart told her otherwise. He was hiding the truth. And more and more often the thought haunted her: he has a mistress.

One evening, when her husband once again said he “had business to take care of,” she decided to check. She waited a few minutes, put on her coat, and quietly followed him. Only one thought echoed in her mind: if I catch him cheating, everything will be clear.

But he didn’t go far. As soon as the apartment door closed behind him, he climbed further up, to the fifth floor. The wife held her breath: “There it is! His mistress lives right in our building…” She pressed against the wall and watched him enter an apartment, carefully closing the door behind him.

In the following days, she repeated this ritual. Each time, he went upstairs and disappeared into the same apartment for hours. The more she saw it, the stronger her jealousy and determination grew.

Finally, one evening she decided to catch him in the act and file for divorce. She waited until he went upstairs again, then followed him as quietly as she could. Her heart pounded so loudly it felt like the entire stairwell could hear it.

She stopped at the door. Pressed her ear to it — silence inside. No laughter, no voices, no footsteps. That made her even more suspicious. She carefully pulled the handle — the door wasn’t locked.

The apartment looked more like an operating room. White sheets instead of curtains, bright lights, a metal table, sterile instruments laid out in perfect order.

On the table lay an unconscious man, hooked up to an IV. Nearby — surgical scissors, scalpels, bandages. The smell of antiseptic hit her nose, and her heart raced even faster.

— “What… what is this?!” — she whispered, clutching the doorframe.

Her husband slowly turned, removed his mask, and said in a cold voice:

— “Now you know everything.”

He took a step toward her, as if he had decided not to hide anything anymore.

— “I was fired. But people still come to me — those who cannot afford surgery in the hospital. They have no money, and I… I cannot just turn my back on them. Here, I do what I know. For a few coins, as long as I can save their lives. But it would have been better for you to think I was cheating, than to discover the truth.”

The woman stared at him in shock, not knowing what was worse — the suspicion of betrayal, or the truth she had just learned.
