When her husband didn’t show up to pick her up on the day of her discharge, Anna felt for the first time during her entire treatment a heavy, sticky sense of anxiety.
After falling down the stairs — suffering a concussion and a broken arm — Anna had been kept in the hospital for several days. During that time, her husband had become excessively attentive: he visited her almost every day, brought her fruit, told her how much he missed her, and how he counted the minutes until she would return home.
When he learned what had happened, he insisted that she be placed in the best private clinic in the city and paid for everything down to the last penny.
Anna felt surrounded by care. She was certain she had the most loving person by her side.
But today, on the day of her discharge, her husband didn’t come. Anna called his number several times — no answer.
She sat on the edge of the bed, trying to convince herself that he was simply running late… but the unease only grew stronger.
Anna opened the door of her room slightly, intending to ask the nurse on duty if her husband had called. And at that very moment, she heard voices in the hallway — two orderlies whispering, but loud enough that every word hit her like an electric shock.

They were talking about her. About her “accident.” About her husband.
About the fact that he wanted her not to get up again after the fall.
Anna clung to the doorframe, afraid to make even the slightest sound. Her heart pounded so loudly that she was sure they would hear it.
