When her family turned their backs on her, Maria had only one path left: she understood how dangerous this river was, but she had no idea that something far more terrifying than the raging current awaited her on the other side
When the village learned that Maria had given birth to a child without a husband, everything was decided quickly. First in whispers, then louder, and finally out in the open: either she stays — but without the child, or she leaves forever.
No one even tried to pretend there was a third option.
Maria didn’t argue. She didn’t cry. She didn’t beg. That very night, she gathered a few belongings, wrapped the baby in a warm blanket, and tied him tightly to herself. The house where she had grown up was left behind — along with the people who, just yesterday, had called her their own.
In the morning, she left the village.
There was only one way ahead. On one side of the village began a dense forest — dark, damp, filled with sounds that made your blood run cold. On the other — a deep ravine. And ahead — the river. Wide, freezing, with a heavy, furious current. The forest was too dangerous. The ravine was a dead end. The river was the only option. Beyond it began the road to the city. And there — a world where no one knows her name.
When Maria reached the riverbank, people were already standing behind her. Relatives, neighbors, familiar faces — and not a single glance held even a trace of warmth.
She stepped into the water. The cold struck sharply, but she didn’t stop. She took another step. Then another. The water rose, her clothes soaked through, the current pulling her down.
“If you cross this river, Maria, there will be no way back! You will no longer exist for this family!” her brother shouted.
She didn’t even turn around. She only held the child tighter and said quietly:
“It’s better to be dead to them… than to live with them.”
And she kept going.
When the water reached her waist, the current grew noticeably stronger. Every step had to be torn from the river, as if it were trying to stop her at any cost.
And that was when Maria lifted her eyes to the opposite shore. There was something there far more terrifying than the river’s current and the anger of the family who had abandoned her. But the woman knew there was no way back… The continuation of the story can be found in the first comment
At first, she thought it was just a shadow. But the figure didn’t disappear. A person stood still, staring straight at her.
She didn’t recognize him immediately. Then her heart tightened. It was a middle-aged man. A former prisoner. A dangerous person. Someone people tried to avoid.
He was looking right at her.
People talked about him even in neighboring villages. A man everyone kept their distance from. The one who returned… but never became one of them again.
The scariest thing was not his face.
The scariest thing was that he didn’t look surprised. He was waiting.
Maria paused for just a second. That was enough. Her foot slipped. The bottom disappeared.
The current hit her with a force she hadn’t expected. The water covered her almost completely, the cold instantly knocking the air out of her lungs. She held the child above the water, but she herself no longer felt any support.
Shouts came from the shore — but no one moved.
And only then did the man on the opposite side spring into action.
He entered the water as if he felt neither cold nor current. He moved quickly, confidently, as if he knew this river better than anyone.
Maria could no longer resist.
And at the last moment, someone’s hands grabbed her and pulled her out of the current. First, he pushed the child onto the shore. Then her.
The young woman lay on the wet ground, gasping for air, still unable to believe she was alive.
The man stood nearby. Soaked, with a heavy gaze, that very scar people talked about. For a few seconds, he simply looked at her, as if deciding something.
Then he said quietly:
“I will stay by your side… if you allow me.”
Maria lifted her eyes. She had just lost everything. But for the first time in a long while, she had a choice.
