The Truth About My MIL’s ‘Antique’ Chair and the $500 She Wanted

Two weeks ago, I fell through a chair at my mother-in-law’s birthday dinner, but what followed revealed a shocking family secret.

My name is Elena, and I’m married to Nick. His mom, Laura, loves to be the center of attention.

For her 63rd birthday, she insisted we bring all the food, drinks, and even a custom cake.

On top of that, we got her a 55-inch TV as a joint gift with Nick’s sister, Dani, and her fiancé.

When we arrived, Laura barely thanked us and pointed out she’d expected a bigger TV.

I tried to ignore her comment and focused on setting up the food.Laura had assigned everyone specific seats with name cards.

Mine was an old wooden chair she claimed was a priceless family heirloom. As soon as I sat down, the chair collapsed, and I fell to the floor, humiliated.

Laura laughed loudly and then said I should pay her $500 because I “broke” her antique chair.

My face burned with embarrassment, and Nick stayed silent. I almost apologized—until George,

my father-in-law, stood up.In a calm voice, George revealed the truth: Laura had bought the chair at Goodwill for $22.

Not only that, but he’d seen her tampering with it in the garage. She’d purposely placed me there to embarrass me.

The room went silent. When pressed, Laura admitted she wanted to “make a point” because she felt I acted “too perfect.”

George told her enough was enough and asked her to leave.Nick and I walked out, and later that night, he finally apologized for not standing up for me sooner.

The next morning, George texted me a photo of the broken chair with the $22 receipt taped to it, apologizing for not speaking up earlier.

Since then, Laura has been staying with a friend. She’s tried to twist the story through texts, but nobody believes her.

Even Uncle Carl, usually neutral, sent me a message saying, “We all saw what really happened. You handled it well.

”Nick and I are now in therapy, working on boundaries and rebuilding trust. For now, we’ve cut contact with Laura until we’re ready to set firm limits

.Laura never got her $500—and she lost a lot more than a fake antique chair that night.
