The sergeant came home after a long period of duty and was stunned by what he saw inside his house.
He had left his family — his wife and two children — to go on a mission.
At the end of his service, he counted the days until his return, unable to bear the long separation from his family any longer. When the order came that they were allowed to return from a special mission, he packed his things and rushed home without hesitation.
His uniform was neatly pressed but noticeably faded, and his boots were covered in dust from faraway lands.
On the way, he kept thinking about the moment he would see his wife’s and children’s faces again, about the warmth and comfort of that moment when he would finally step back into their home.
He remembered the last letters, in which his daughter wrote about her little brother and the dog that always stayed close to protect them.
But his heart began to pound faster as he reached his street, where their apartment was located. From the upper balcony, the wind carried the scent of burning leaves, and the quiet melancholy of the street whispered — something had changed.
He reached out to open the door, but inside he felt a slight unease and fear — he didn’t know what awaited him inside.
When he entered, he saw the children alone with the dog, and his wife was nowhere to be seen.
“Daddy…?” the little girl called, jumping up and trembling.
“And where is Mommy?” the sergeant asked calmly.
The child froze in fear, and what she said completely shook the sergeant.
The continuation is in the first comment.
The sergeant stood still, unable to contain the wave of emotions rising within him. His daughter, clutching the dog’s paw, could barely speak:
“Mommy… left… with…” — her words stuck in her throat, but her eyes said everything.
The sergeant took a step forward, held his children tightly, and his heart pounded as if sensing disaster. He knew he would have to make a difficult decision, but first, he needed to understand what had happened.
The dog growled softly, as if feeling its master’s unease. The sergeant walked through the apartment, checking each room: everything was tidy, but there was no sign of his wife. On the table lay a letter — carefully folded, as if it had been waiting for him.
He picked it up carefully, and his eyes widened — his wife’s handwriting was unmistakable, but the content hit him like a cold wave.
“I can’t…” — the letter began, followed by words explaining that she had to leave to protect the children from a danger he knew nothing about during his service.
The sergeant fell to his knees, hugged his children tightly, and looked at them with determination. He understood: the service was over, but the real battle was just beginning — the fight for the safety and happiness of his family.
The wind outside grew stronger, but it no longer carried unrest — it became the symbol of a new beginning, where the father once again became the shield of his children, ready to face any challenge that lay ahead.
