The cat had been acting strange all evening. It hissed, meowed, and wouldn’t move away from the stove. I thought it was hungry, or maybe something hurt. I fed it, petted it, but it still stood there — tense, tail pressed down, staring warily toward the gas stove.

— What’s wrong with you, buddy? — I muttered, about to get annoyed. But something in its eyes made me stop. It wasn’t just afraid — it was protecting.

I slowly walked up to the stove. The cat arched its back, hissing even louder, as if to stop me. But I bent down anyway and peered into the narrow gap between the stove and the wall.

The next second, my heart nearly stopped. Instinctively, I screamed and jumped back in terror. What I saw there, I will never forget for the rest of my life…

In the darkness, something moved — long, slick, with shiny skin and dead eyes. When I realized it was a snake, my heart almost stopped.

Instinctively, I backed away, clutching the cat to my chest. But it wasn’t afraid — on the contrary, it tensed, arched its back, and hissed. The snake slowly slithered out from under the stove and crawled straight toward me.

I backed up until my back hit the wall. The world shrank to a single sound — a soft hiss, like a whisper of death.

And suddenly, the cat sprang forward. It leapt at the snake like a tiny lion. The snake instantly turned, raised its head, and froze in front of it, ready to strike.

A heavy silence fell between them. It felt as though time had stopped — two predators, two shadows, frozen in the moment before the attack.

I only managed to scream and run out of the kitchen, my trembling fingers dialing 911. Behind the door, I could hear hissing, dull thuds, and the scratching of claws.

When the rescuers arrived, they pulled the snake out from behind the stove. And my cat — calm, proud, as if nothing had happened — came up to me and rubbed against my leg.

Now, every time I look into his eyes, I remember that night. And I understand: once, he has already saved my life.
