On my daughter’s birthday, my former mother-in-law sent her a plush teddy bear as a gift; at first my daughter was genuinely happy about the toy, but just a minute later she said in fear, “Mom, look, what is this?”
I took the teddy bear in my hands and immediately felt something strange and hard inside. After carefully checking the toy, I realized it wasn’t part of the stuffing, and I immediately called the police
I tried to make my daughter’s sixth birthday calm and warm. Without unnecessary noise or pomp, just children, cake, balloons, and laughter in our living room. I was just lighting the candles when the familiar hum of children filled the room. Someone laughed, someone dropped a piece of candy, paper party hats slipped to the side, and in that mess there was something truly alive.
At that moment, Sofia appeared in the doorway. She was hugging the new teddy bear and smiling with the kind of sincerity only children have. The bear was in a pink box with a neatly tied ribbon, which the courier had delivered just recently.
There was a note on the box: “Open on the birthday.” The handwriting was strict, without emojis or congratulations. I immediately understood it was from my ex-husband’s parents. Especially from his mother, a woman who always loved control and never did anything without a reason.
Sofia squeezed the bear’s paw and suddenly fell silent. Her voice grew quieter as she looked at me and asked:
— Mom, why is it so heavy?
I took the toy in my hands and felt the same thing. Under the soft fur, on the side, there was something dense and cold. It wasn’t stuffing and not part of the shape. There was clearly something extra inside.
Everything inside me tightened. I took the teddy bear to the bedroom and closed the door. The room was quiet. I carefully parted the fur and saw a thin seam that hadn’t been made at a factory. It was almost invisible.
When I pressed harder, something solid responded under my fingers. I cut open the seam and went pale. Inside the plush toy there was… I immediately called the police. Continued in the first comment
Inside was a tiny camera with a microphone and a memory card. Everything was hidden in such a way that no one would suspect anything.
It became clear to me what that gift was for. My former mother-in-law hoped to spy on our lives. She wanted to find compromising material against me, record conversations, scenes, any small detail that could be used against me in court.
Her goal was simple and cruel: to deprive me of child support and try to take my child away from me by proving that I am a bad mother.
I didn’t cause a scene or call her. Three days later, I went to the police and handed over the toy along with a statement. The examination confirmed the fact of illegal surveillance and an attempt to interfere in private life.
After that, it wasn’t couriers or guests who visited their house anymore. Cameras, reports, and summonses put an end to this story. They wanted to secretly watch me and my daughter, but in the end, they themselves ended up under the watch of the law.
And for Sofia, I bought a new teddy bear. A regular one, soft and light. Just the way a gift for a child should be.
