New Covid variant “Cicada” prompts vaccine concerns and symptom warnings

The warning signs are back. A highly mutated Covid strain, nicknamed “Cicada,” is quietly circling the globe — and it may slip past some of the protection we thought we could trust. Detected in 23 countries and counting, it’s already in wastewater, hospitals, and homes. Experts say vaccines may not fully stop it, and yet… Continues…

Cicada, officially known as BA.3.2, is not a simple repeat of the past. First spotted in South Africa in late 2024, it has since appeared from the US and UK to Japan and Kenya, often detected only after it has already spread. With up to 75% variation from earlier strains, it looks unfamiliar to the immune system, raising fears about how easily it can dodge existing defenses. Yet doctors on the front lines report something crucial: so far, it does not appear more deadly than previous variants.

Symptoms largely mirror what we already know—cough, fever, fatigue, sore throat, congestion, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell. Home tests still pick it up. Vaccines may not block every infection, but they continue to slash the risk of hospitalization and death. The message from experts is clear: stay alert, not paralyzed. Wash your hands, mask when needed, rest when sick, and keep vaccinations up to date. The virus is evolving—but so are we.
