My husband was bragging to his colleagues that he’s the boss of the house, but I put him in his place: here’s what I had to do

My husband was bragging to his colleagues that he’s the boss of the house, but I put him in his place.

I was standing in the kitchen, mixing salads, while loud laughter echoed from the living room. My husband was shining in the company of his colleagues, cheerfully cracking joke after joke.

But I had neither the time nor the desire to laugh with them. Especially since most of his jokes were about me.

Today, he was celebrating his promotion, so he invited everyone to our house. A large, spacious country house that I had once dreamed of. We each had our own cars, and commuting to work was never an issue.

Life seemed to be going well. But lately, my husband had started being too sharp with me. As if he had forgotten that I’m not a servant, but his wife.

– Can you imagine, if I hadn’t picked up my wife back then, she’d still be stuck in her little world, his loud voice boomed, drowned out by the guests’ laughter. – She works as a teacher. That’s her hobby, you know?

I sighed, trying to ignore him. I gathered the dirty plates from the table and headed to the kitchen. I felt terrible. It’s one thing when such teasing happens among close people, but it’s another when it happens in front of strangers.

– What will you give me today, my teacher? came his voice from behind.

I flinched. Inside, I felt a tight knot of humiliation. It seemed like he was enjoying playing the boss in front of an audience, showing off his “superiority.”

I took a deep breath, trying to keep a straight face. Starting a scene in front of guests would be the height of foolishness.

– She cooks decently, my husband continued, but she doesn’t have much else going for her. The dishes get done by the dishwasher, the floors are cleaned by the robot vacuum, the laundry gets washed by the washing machine. And then she says she’s tired! Remember that one time I came to work wearing two different shoes? That was her—she put them together. I grabbed them in the morning without looking and went off.

The guests laughed. I couldn’t hold it in anymore and showed everyone “who’s in charge of the house.” To be continued in the first comment 👇👇

– Of course…

But as soon as I said that, the room fell silent. Dozens of eyes were fixed on me.

– What did you just say, dear? my husband asked with a cold smile.

– I’m saying that if you can’t tell the shoes apart, it’s not my fault, I replied calmly.

– Well, of course, you’re my wife. You’re supposed to help me get ready in the mornings like I’m a child.

I slowly raised my gaze to him.

– You’re an adult. You’re responsible for yourself. And yes, I have a job that I love.

My husband barely contained his anger.

– Teacher. You live off my money, don’t forget that.

Those words hit harder than a slap.

– Should I remind you, darling, whose money we lived on in the beginning? My parents’ money. While you were learning to be a “successful man.” I worked because I wanted to, not because I needed to.

This time, the guests started laughing at him. My husband silently poured himself a full glass and drank it all in one gulp. I turned and went to the kitchen.

That night, I fell asleep with a heavy heart. And the next morning, while my husband was still sleeping, I quietly packed my things.

I was heading to my parents’ house with one clear thought in mind: it was time to start a new life. A life where I would be appreciated.
