My Dad’s New Wife Won’t Let Me Join My Brother’s Birthday Because I’m an ‘Outsider’

I never thought a simple text from my dad would ruin my week, but that’s exactly what happened when I found out I wasn’t invited to my little brother Ryan’s birthday.I’m Britt, 19 and in college. Ryan is seven, full of energy, obsessed with space, and always calls me his “favorite person.” I’ve been there for every birthday and school event since he was born. But after Dad married Melissa, things changed. She was never openly rude, just distant, like I didn’t belong.

When I texted Dad about Ryan’s party, he replied: “Melissa thinks it’s better if you sit this one out. She feels like you take attention away from Ryan. Please respect her wishes.” Reading that broke me. To her, I was just an “outsider.”On the day of the party, I stayed home until my grandpa suddenly showed up and told me to grab Ryan’s gift. He drove me straight there.

The moment I walked in, everything went quiet, but Ryan ran over, hugged me, and shouted, “Sissy! You came!” When he opened his present, the Lego rocket set, he told everyone, “My sister got me the best gift ever!”Melissa was upset, but Grandpa stood firm and said, “She’s his sister. She belongs here.”

For the rest of the party, Ryan wouldn’t leave my side. He even whispered before blowing out his candles, “I wish you’d always be here.”Later, Dad came to me and said quietly, “I’m sorry for not standing up for you.” I don’t know what things will be like with Melissa in the future, but one thing is certain: Ryan is my brother, and nothing will ever change that.
