Amou Haji, originally from Iran, became famous as the man who didn’t bathe for over six decades.
Why did he give up water and soap?
In his youth, Amou Haji suffered deep emotional trauma – according to some sources, he was rejected by a woman and decided to withdraw from society and live in the desert.
Over time, he developed a phobia of water. He believed that if he bathed, he would get sick and die. That’s why he avoided any contact with water – even rain.
Amou Haji lived in a clay hut or simply in a hole dug in the ground. His diet was so extreme, it’s almost unbelievable:
He mostly ate carrion, especially porcupine carcasses he found by the road.
He also ate spoiled food, rotting meat, and scraps from the garbage.
He drank dirty water from rusty tin cans, believing it was “natural” and “healthy.”
He smoked – not only tobacco, but sometimes dried animal dung, which he stuffed into a pipe.
In 2022, locals persuaded him to take a bath for the first time in decades. Almost immediately, his biggest fear came true: a few weeks after bathing, Amou Haji died, at around 94 years old.
It’s possible that bathing disrupted his biological defenses, which had kept him healthy for years, and all the microbes and bacteria ultimately led to his death.
