The husband nodded and agreed far too quickly. Because he had been waiting for this day. Waiting for it for a very long time.

In front of the doctors, he put on a perfect act of grief: he hunched his shoulders, lowered his head, and sobbed so convincingly that a young nurse secretly wiped away her tears.

“Please, at least let me say goodbye to her…” he begged in a trembling voice. “I’m going to lose the love of my life…”

The doctors agreed.

He entered the room alone. His wife lay motionless on the bed. She looked peaceful, almost alive—as if she were simply sleeping. Only the tube in her throat revealed the truth.

The husband sat down beside her. He noticed that the nurse behind the glass wall never took her eyes off him. He leaned closer, feigned tenderness, ran his hand through her hair, wiping away a tear he had forced himself to produce.

And leaning close to his wife’s ear, he whispered so quietly that no one but her could hear:

“I’ll order the highest-quality coffin for you, my dear…”

He smirked.

“I already have the money. All of your money is mine now.”

He straightened up, cast one last glance at her, and was about to leave the room when the phone in his hand vibrated.

A message. As he read it, the husband was seized by sheer terror and almost cried out in shock…  Continued in the first comment 

It was from his wife’s father. He opened it—and the blood froze in his veins.

“Do not disconnect my daughter from the machines under any circumstances. I’ve found a specialist. He has reviewed all the scans and is certain that surgery will help. We are flying out today.”

The phone nearly slipped from his hand. His breathing faltered. His head began to ring. Everything was going wrong. Damn her father.

The surgery was performed immediately. Long hours of waiting followed. He sat in the corridor staring at a single point, truly frightened for the first time in his life. He hoped his wife would not wake up.

Unfortunately, a few days later, she opened her eyes. She had survived. And the most terrifying thing for the husband was that she remembered everything.

Every word. Every whispered confession. Even the tone of his voice.

When the man entered the room with a forced smile and the well-rehearsed role of a caring husband, his wife turned her head and looked at him clearly, fully aware. A week later, she filed for divorce.

And he never understood at what moment he had lost.
