I accidentally overheard what my mother-in-law was saying to her friends and poured the salad on her head.
It was my mother-in-law’s anniversary. I went there to help with cooking.
By five o’clock, the guests arrived. From the conversations, I realized they were her friends. She sat them at the table and asked them to bring the dishes. Suddenly, I heard one of the women lean over to my mother-in-law and whisper:
— Is this your daughter-in-law? How long have you been married? Five years?
— Yes, — my mother-in-law replied briefly.
I stood at the door and held my breath.
— Are you determined? — the friend asked quietly.
After I heard what they were talking about, I went out to the guests with a bowl of salad and poured the entire contents on her head… I explain what happened in the first comment
— Yes, — I heard my mother-in-law’s firm answer. — I don’t want them to be together…
— A child will come, and everything will be fine. You’re not going to break up the family, are you? — the guest asked cautiously.
— There won’t be a child, — my mother-in-law laughed. — I’ve taken care of that.
My heart started pounding louder than ever before.
— I go to their house when she’s not there. She takes pills to get pregnant faster… So I switched them for birth control pills. They’re in her plastic container — all the same shape. I dump the old ones out and put in mine…
When I heard this, I felt the ground slip from beneath my feet. We had been trying for five years to conceive, and we just couldn’t.
— I’ve already been telling my son: a childless woman isn’t for you, — my mother-in-law continued. — A year, and he’ll be free.
I struggled to hold back the tears.
— Darling, bring us the salad! — my mother-in-law shouted from the room.
I took the bowl of salad. When I entered the living room, I noticed my mother-in-law becoming suspicious.
I slowly walked up to her… and poured the entire bowl of salad right on her head.
— I heard everything, — I said in a trembling but confident voice.
There was a deathly silence in the room. My mother-in-law’s friends gasped. I turned around and walked out.
Later, my husband found out everything. And I’m grateful to fate that he didn’t give in to his mother’s intrigues.
