In 2009, in a village in China’s Hunan Province, Ilyeon Xie gave birth to her first child – a boy named Hu Kang. Like any mother, she eagerly awaited the moment she would see her baby.

But what she saw just hours after delivery was something she would never forget.

When they brought her the baby, she was paralyzed with fear. Hu Kang was born with a rare and severe condition – a bilateral transverse facial cleft.

The front part of his skull had not fused properly during fetal development, resulting in two deep splits running from the corners of his mouth to his ears. It gave his face a frightening, almost mask-like appearance.

The family was devastated. Doctors said treatment was possible, but extremely expensive. In 2010, Ilyeon decided to ask for help.

She shared her story with journalists, and the photos of little Hu Kang stirred public emotion. People from across China – and later from abroad – began donating money for his treatment.

Thanks to the collected funds, Hu Kang underwent two very complex surgeries.

Surgeons tried to restore the symmetry of his face. Although the initial result was far from perfect, doctors assured the family that real changes would become visible within 10 years.

And they were right.

In photos taken several years after the surgeries, Hu Kang is seen as a smiling schoolboy. The deep clefts are gone, and only faint scars remain.
