Doctor explains HEAT RASH (miliaria) in a baby | Causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention

**Understanding Heat Rash (Miliaria) in Babies: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention**

Heat rash, also known as miliaria, is a common condition in babies, especially during hot and humid weather. It occurs when sweat ducts become blocked and sweat gets trapped under the skin. This can lead to irritation and small, itchy red bumps or blisters. While it can be uncomfortable for your baby, heat rash is usually not serious and can be easily managed with proper care.

**Causes of Heat Rash**

The primary cause of heat rash in babies is excessive sweating in hot or humid environments. Babies have smaller sweat glands that are more prone to blockage, making them more susceptible to developing heat rash. Overdressing your baby or using heavy creams can also contribute to the development of this condition by trapping heat and sweat against the skin.

**Symptoms of Heat Rash**

Heat rash typically presents as small red or pink bumps on the skin. The rash is most commonly found in areas where sweat tends to accumulate, such as the neck, diaper area, armpits, and skin folds. The affected areas may feel itchy or mildly uncomfortable. In some cases, small blisters may also form.

**Treatment and Prevention**

To treat heat rash, it’s important to keep your baby cool and dry. Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing and keep them in a well-ventilated area. Avoid using heavy creams or lotions that can block the sweat ducts further. Cool baths and applying a gentle, unscented moisturizer can help soothe the skin. If the rash persists or seems to worsen, consult a pediatrician for further advice.

Maintaining a comfortable environment and ensuring your baby stays hydrated can help prevent heat rash. During hot weather, monitor your baby’s temperature and adjust clothing as needed. Using a fan or air conditioning can also help keep the area cool.
