Before You Get Your Hopes Up: A Lesson in Self-Worth

I was in a restaurant chatting with a friend when a guy sat next to me.

He said, “Before you get your hopes up, I have a girlfriend.”

I looked at him, smiled, and replied,

“Before you get your hopes up, I have dreams bigger than this conversation.”

He seemed taken aback, so I explained. “I’ve spent years focusing on myself—

building my career, traveling, and working on my mental health.

I’m here today celebrating a new chapter in my life, not looking for one to start with anyone else.”

My friend smiled knowingly; she’d been by my side through all the ups and downs.

The man’s expression softened.

“Wow, I didn’t mean to assume anything.

I guess we all think people are looking for what we are.”

He chuckled awkwardly and apologized.

We ended up having a surprisingly deep conversation about boundaries,

self-worth, and how often people misread situations because of their own insecurities.

When I left the restaurant that day, I felt empowered.

It was a reminder that our value isn’t determined by anyone else’s assumptions.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you

can do is stand firm in who you are and what you’re striving for—

because before anyone gets their hopes up about you,

your dreams should always come first.
