Before leaving on a business trip, I forgot to tell my husband that the video camera in the living room had been repaired, and when I came home and watched the recordings, I was horrified by what had really been going on in our house 

Before leaving for the business trip, I forgot to tell my husband one important detail — that the camera in the living room had been fixed. At the time, I didn’t think it mattered, just waved it off and left. A mistake.

When I returned, I suddenly felt the urge to check how the camera was actually recording. The technician had said everything was working, but I decided to make sure myself. I planned to delete the recordings anyway — the camera had been installed “just in case.” At the last moment, I changed my mind and pressed play.

I stared at the screen and couldn’t believe my eyes. It was our living room. The very one we had recently renovated with our own hands. I was so proud of that place. Behind one of the shelves, there was a safe that only my husband and I knew about. We kept money and important documents there, which is exactly why we had decided to install the camera in the first place.

I had been away on a two-week business trip and could never have imagined what was happening in my absence. The scariest part was that when I came back, there wasn’t the slightest sign of any outsider in the apartment. If it hadn’t been for the camera, I would never have known anything.

It was my husband who discovered that the camera was broken. He was the one who insisted that I call a technician, confident that the repair would take not one day, but several days, or even a couple of weeks.

But everything turned out to be much simpler. The technician fixed the problem in less than an hour. Nothing serious, just a routine malfunction.

I didn’t tell my husband about it not because I wanted to test him or accuse him of anything. It simply didn’t matter to me. I never even considered that he might have a secret. The camera was just an ordinary household detail, easy to forget — especially before an urgent business trip.

On the recording, I saw my husband come home, the front door closing behind him. And then something happened that filled me with horror  Continued in the first comment 

My husband was not alone. With him was a man I had never seen before. They calmly walked into the living room, sat down on the couch, and started talking as if they were discussing the weather.

— This camera doesn’t record anything, does it?

— No, it hasn’t been working for a few days.

— Ah, I see. What did you want to talk to me about?

— You need to rob my apartment.

— What do you mean?

— Literally. My wife has to think we were robbed. I urgently need this money, but she must not know anything.

— Did something happen?

— Yes. The mistress is pregnant. Now she’s threatening to tell everything to my wife and relatives and is demanding money. A lot of money. And we have savings, but my wife must not find out about it.

I watched those recordings over and over again, rewound them, paused them, listened to every single word. The person I trusted, lived with, and made plans with turned out to be a stranger. It simply didn’t make sense in my mind.

That same evening, I decided not to put anything off. When my husband came home from work, I walked up to him, looked him straight in the eyes, and calmly said:

— Before leaving, I forgot to tell you that the camera had been repaired.

He turned pale instantly. I saw fear flash in his eyes. He understood everything without another word.

I didn’t explain anything further and I didn’t yell. I just said what I felt:

— You can take all the savings and get out of my house.

Sometimes the truth is scarier than any suspicion. But even scarier is living with someone who is willing to destroy your life for the sake of their own lies.
