At eight months pregnant, I accidentally overheard my billionaire husband and his mother plotting to

My father—Daniel Mercer—wasn’t just any man. He was a former spy, a master of shadows and whispers. He had lived a life of secrets and silences that I once ran from, craving normalcy over the intrigue that was his constant companion. But in that moment, with the chill of betrayal still clinging to me like a damp fog, I realized how desperately I needed that life of his.

His presence felt like a shield, a promise of protection from the nightmare that had become my reality. As he approached, the guard who had blocked me took a step back, something in my father’s eyes warning him of the danger. The air seemed to shift, electric with unspoken tension.

“Let’s move quickly,” my father said, his voice low but commanding. He placed a gentle hand on my back, guiding me towards a side exit. His confidence was infectious, cutting through my fear with every measured step.

As we made our way through a maze of shadowed corridors, he began to explain the plan. “I’ve arranged a secondary escape route,” he murmured, eyes scanning for any threat. “It’s a bit unconventional, but it’ll take us far from Adrian’s reach.”

We slipped through a side door and into the night. The tarmac stretched before us, the distant glow of city lights a reminder of the life I was leaving behind. My father led me to a small hangar where a sleek, unmarked jet awaited, its engines humming softly, a promise of freedom.

The pilot, a woman with keen eyes and a ready smile, nodded as we approached. “Ready when you are, Mr. Mercer,” she said, confirming the connection between them that had been honed over years of trust and shared missions.

As I climbed aboard, my father’s hand steadying me, I glanced back at the building. The guard was still there, speaking urgently into a radio. It wouldn’t be long before Adrian realized I was gone. But by then, it would be too late.

Inside the jet, I sank into the plush leather seat, overwhelmed by a sudden wave of exhaustion. My father sat across from me, his expression softening as he watched me.

“Thank you,” I whispered, words barely more than a breath. Gratitude and relief mingled with the lingering fear, creating a cocktail of emotion I could hardly process.

He nodded, understanding and regret mingling in his eyes. “I should have stayed closer,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “But I’m here now. And I’ll be damned if I let anyone harm you or your child.”

The engines roared to life, and the jet began to taxi down the runway. As we lifted into the air, the tension of the night seemed to fall away, the city below shrinking into a patchwork quilt of lights and shadows.

I leaned back, hand resting protectively over my belly. In that moment, I realized that despite the chaos and danger, I had something invaluable—my father, my child, and the promise of a future free from Adrian’s grasp. The path ahead was uncertain and fraught with challenges, but I knew that with my father by my side, I had a fighting chance.

And in the end, that was all I needed.
