Even though the number of twin births increased by 72% between 1980 and 2018, it remains rare: about 33 per 1,000 births. As for identical twins—those who are genetically the same—it’s only about 3 to 4 cases per 1,000.

So imagine the surprise of Savana Combs, a 23-year-old American from Middleburg, Florida, when she found out she was expecting identical twins. She was overjoyed.

But a second piece of news upset the picture: both of her daughters have Down syndrome.

Savana and her partner, Justin Ackerman, immediately showed unwavering love.

“This is an extremely rare situation. But to me, they are gems,” she told News4JAX.

A challenging pregnancy, but a choice made

The young mom decided to share her story on TikTok, where she posts about her daily life, emotions, and the love she has for Kenadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman.

In an emotional video, Savana explains that she was advised to terminate her pregnancy because doctors believed the babies had no chance of survival.

But she refused.

“Every appointment where their hearts were still beating was a miracle,” she recalls.

While Justin was in military training, Savana was hospitalized at 29 weeks. That’s when the two little girls were born on May 12, 2021. Born prematurely, they spent several weeks in intensive care before joining their home.

“They are mono-di twins: each had their own amniotic sac but shared the same placenta—they are therefore identical,” she explains.
“Having mono-di twins with Down syndrome is a case that occurs in about one in two million.”

Children like any others

For Savana, her daughters’ disability does not define their humanity.

“They feel, they laugh, they progress. Maybe at their own pace, but they move forward,” she says proudly.
“They are two little girls full of light.”

On social media, Savana continues to document their progress. Between smiles, hugs, and first words, she shows the world that difference is a treasure.

“My goal is for them to know they have as much potential as anyone.”

A dignified response to judgment

As often on the internet, some comments were harsh.

“I would never want children like that,” wrote one user.
“If mine were like that, I would put them up for adoption.”

Savana replied firmly and tenderly:

“Luckily, they are not your children. God entrusted them to those capable of loving them unconditionally.”

A lesson in unconditional love

Today, Kenadi and Mckenli are much more than two adorable little girls. They are a symbol of strength, resilience, and limitless love.

Through her story, Savana reminds us that everyone deserves to be welcomed with kindness, no matter their differences.
