A horrible accident took place… The aftermath is terrifying…
The end of the year has been catastrophic for these tourists. While they were planning a trip to Lapland, they experienced a real nightmare while crossing Norway. The bus they were traveling on plunged into a lake on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
“Everyone is shocked by this news. Many passengers were foreigners,” said a statement from the police of the Nordland district.
Three people who were on board the bus lost their lives in the accident. Although tragic, this toll could have been much worse, as the bus was carrying a total of 58 passengers.
Half of the vehicle was submerged when the bus fell into the water. Many foreign tourists were on board, including several French, according to local authorities.
In addition to Norwegians, there were also travelers from various countries, including China, Singapore, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, South Sudan, and of course, France.
Bent Are Eilertsen, a police officer from Nordland County, explained that it was difficult to compile a full list of the passengers due to the diversity of nationalities on board.
The rescue teams intervened around 1:30 p.m. near Raftsundet, a strait dividing the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos, where the accident took place, according to information shared by Paris Match. Fortunately, despite the three victims, the other passengers were rescued and taken to a nearby school.
The police mention various factors that could explain this tragic accident. The weather conditions had been particularly bad in recent days. “The region was hit by harsh weather conditions, with strong gusts of wind, which made the rescue efforts even more difficult,” the police said.
The authorities’ priority is now to assist the injured. An investigation has been opened to determine the exact causes of the tragedy. The hope is that the survivors will soon be able to return to their home countries and forget this tragic Christmas of 2024.
