Our daughter brought her boyfriend home to meet us, but as soon as my husband saw him, he pointed to the door and forbade our daughter from seeing him 

Our daughter had always been secretive when it came to her personal life. Yes, she shared her studies, her plans, even gossip about her friends, but about boys – not a word. We used to joke that she was probably waiting for the perfect moment to introduce someone special.

And that moment finally came. Our daughter said she wanted us to meet her boyfriend.

On Sunday morning I was already busy in the kitchen – setting a festive table. My husband walked gloomily around the house, but I thought it was just nerves, the typical worry of a father.

When the doorbell rang, I smiled and went to open it. On the doorstep stood a tall man in a suit. Next to him – our daughter, glowing with happiness.

— Mom, Dad, this is… my boyfriend, — she said with such pride that my heart tightened for a second.

But in the next moment, I saw my husband’s face change. It became hard, then pale.

— You?.. — he whispered. — What are you doing here?

The man tensed up too, but just shrugged:

— I’m your daughter’s boyfriend.

— What?? — my husband’s voice trembled. — Get out of my house! Now!

— Dad! — our daughter cried in disbelief. — What’s going on?

Clenching his fists, he said:

— This man… it’s because of him I went to prison. He betrayed me when we were kids. We got into trouble together, but he put all the blame on me. I lost a year of my life because of him. He’s my former classmate.

Silence fell. Our daughter looked at us with confusion and anger:

— So what? He’s not the same person he was twenty years ago! I love him!

My husband’s former classmate walked out of the house. Our daughter ran after him and slammed the door.

We were left alone. My husband was breathing heavily, his hands trembling. I understood him – an old wound had suddenly reopened. But I also understood our daughter: you don’t choose your feelings.

Now we faced the hardest decision: either we accept this man for our daughter’s happiness, or we risk losing her trust forever.
