Embracing independence

At just 29, Lisa had already been living independently for over ten years. Settled in her apartment, she worked full-time and was well-liked by her colleagues for her kindness and dedication.

Her mother recalls:

“Lisa could do everything at the store, except handle the cash register. She loved her job, and her colleagues were happy to have her among them.”

It was in this setting that Lisa met a man, also living with trisomy 21. Their relationship was strong and respectful, with both of them keen to maintain their independence. Her mother, Patti, had always made sure to discuss essential topics with her daughter—contraception, balance in a relationship—so that she could make fully informed choices.

The birth of Nick

When Lisa became a mother, Patti was initially surprised, but she immediately made a clear decision: she would support her daughter in this journey. Since it is rare for a man with Down syndrome to become a father, the situation was unusual. But what mattered most was that the child grow up surrounded by love.

Lisa devoted herself to Nick with tenderness and perseverance, while continuing her work and daily life. Patti, always present, formed a true educational team with her daughter.
