The flight attendant noticed a 10-year-old boy making a strange sign with his fingers: a few minutes later the plane made an emergency landing 

It was an ordinary morning flight from Munich to Barcelona. The sun was just rising when flight attendant Anna walked down the aisle between the rows, checking that all passengers had fastened their seatbelts. Everything was going according to plan until her attention was drawn to the boy in the third row by the window.

He was one of those quiet children who try to stay unnoticed. He looked about ten, maybe eleven years old. Next to him sat a man in his forties, with a solid build. His hand rested on the armrest, lightly touching the boy’s shoulder. The man’s gaze was cold and piercing.

Anna was almost past when she suddenly noticed the boy barely visible forming a strange sign with his fingers. At first, she paid no attention – maybe he was just playing. But a few minutes later the plane made an emergency landing and all passengers were evacuated  Continued in the first comment 

Something in the boy’s eyes disturbed the flight attendant: he was full of fear and a silent plea for help.

Later, when the father got up and went to the restroom, the boy repeated the same gesture – but now with despair. His eyes were full of terror.

Anna stopped. She knew that sign. She had been trained in hand signals children in danger can use. That sign was a request for help.

Without showing it, she approached and smiled as she handed him a glass of apple juice.

— This is your favorite, isn’t it?

The boy nodded silently and took the glass with trembling hands. He looked around again – as if afraid the man would come back.

When the man returned, he threw a suspicious glance at Anna. His forehead shone with sweat, though the air conditioning worked well. He sat down and immediately looked at the child, then at his phone.

Anna felt her heart race.

Discreetly, she passed a note to the pilots through a colleague: “Possible kidnapping. Row 3A. Child signaling for help. Man behaving suspiciously. Request emergency landing and police at airport.”

Ten minutes later the captain announced: “Due to a technical malfunction we must make an unscheduled landing in Geneva.”

The man became nervous. He asked again to go to the restroom. But in the aisle two security officers were already waiting, pre-warned by the crew.

When they led him out, he shouted:

— You don’t understand! This is my son! I have papers!

But the papers were fake.

Downstairs police and a child protection officer were already waiting for the boy. When they gently asked if he knew the man, the boy shook his head and began to cry.

Later it was revealed he had been kidnapped weeks earlier from another country. Interpol and local authorities led the search, but no one expected to find him on the plane.
