During a job interview at a large company, they yelled at me and threw me out of the office because of my age, without even realizing who I really am and what I am capable of
I walked into the waiting room and immediately felt the stares. Along the wall sat the candidates for the position I had dreamed of — young, confident, dressed in expensive suits. Some were flipping through their résumés, some were typing on their phones, others were repeating rehearsed phrases. I was the only one who was almost fifty-five.
I had wanted this position for a long time. I had worked toward it my entire life. Yes, over the past few months I had changed a lot. After losing my husband and my son at the same time, time seemed to speed up. Grief ages you faster than years ever could. But life does not stop, even when everything inside you is broken.
When they called my name, I stood up and calmly walked into the office.
The manager looked at me as if I had entered the wrong door.
— The interview for the cleaning position is on the second floor, — he said with a smirk.
— No, I’m here for the manager position, — I replied, handing him the folder with my documents.
He did not even take it in his hands.
— Are you sure? As far as I remember, there weren’t even computers in your time. Do you even understand what a manager does?
I nodded calmly.
— I do. I have the proper education.
He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.
— Why aren’t you retired yet? Have you seen our candidates? We need young faces. What are we supposed to tell our partners? Let me introduce you to our grandmother?
I felt a lump rising in my throat.
— You haven’t even looked at my documents. I’m a good professional.
— I don’t need your papers. Women your age don’t fit here. Stay home and cook soup for your grandchildren. Free up the office.
At that moment, I realized that to him I was neither a person nor a professional. I was simply an old woman.
Tears streamed down my cheeks. I quickly wiped my face so no one in the hallway would see my weakness and walked out. They threw me out without even opening the folder. They did not even bother to find out who I was or what I could do.
But they did not know the most important thing, and they had no idea what I was about to do very soon I shared the continuation of my story in the first comment
They did not know that for twenty-five years I had led a department in a large company. That multimillion-dollar contracts had passed through my hands. That I had been invited to give lectures to young specialists.
After my husband and son died, I left my job myself because I could barely breathe from the pain. I needed time to learn how to live again.
The next morning, I went to the office next door — to their direct competitors.
There, everything was different. The manager carefully studied my résumé, asked precise questions, and asked me to talk about complex projects. At one point, he looked up at me and said:
— I know your name. We’ve been following your results for a long time.
I was hired.
Within a month, the company’s performance indicators began to rise. We revised the strategy, improved our work with key clients, and signed new contracts.
And those who had thrown me out of the office began to face problems. They lost several major partners. The market does not forgive superficial decisions.
For them, age and appearance were important. For me — experience, knowledge, and results.
And in the end, that is exactly what made all the difference
