The cleaning lady had never interfered in conversations during meetings in her entire life and had always silently done her job, but that day she couldn’t hold back and said something that shocked all the businessmen 

 

Marta had been working as a cleaner in a large international company for almost three years. She was fifty-five years old, and during that time she had learned one simple rule: it’s better to be invisible.

That morning the secretary called her on the internal phone.

— Marta, could you come to the meeting room? Someone spilled tea on the table.

Marta left the bucket in the storage room, took a cloth and a bottle of cleaning solution, and walked down the long corridor. In front of the heavy wooden door of the meeting room, as always, she knocked quietly.

There was no answer. Behind the door, male voices could be heard; the conversation sounded businesslike and tense. Marta waited a few seconds and then carefully opened the door.

In the room, four men in formal suits were sitting around a long table. At the head of the table was the company’s director — Robert Wilson. To his right sat his development director — David. Opposite them were two foreign partners.

A puddle of tea had spread across the table, and several drops had already fallen onto the floor.

— Please clean that up, — Robert said without interrupting the conversation.

Marta silently knelt down and began wiping the liquid. The men continued their discussion as if she didn’t even exist in the room.

— We are ready to sign the contract next week, — Robert said confidently.

David slid a folder with documents toward him.

— All the conditions have already been agreed upon.

One of the partners nodded.

— There is only one question. The southern site. We were assured that the location is completely ready.

Marta suddenly froze. The cloth stopped in her hand. At that moment she realized with horror that she couldn’t remain silent, that she had to intervene.

The southern site.

She had heard about it a few days earlier. At that time, Marta was mopping the floor near David’s office. The door was slightly open, and he was speaking loudly and irritably on the phone.

— Nothing is ready there and it won’t be before autumn, — he had said then. — I don’t understand why you promised them such deadlines.

Marta had simply walked past at that time. It wasn’t her business. But now she stood by the door and understood that the director apparently didn’t know about it.

She finished wiping the floor and headed toward the exit. She had almost grabbed the door handle when she suddenly stopped.

She had stayed silent all her life, but now she couldn’t just walk away. Marta slowly turned toward the table.

— Excuse me, — she said quietly.

The men noticed her for the first time.

David frowned.

— Excuse me, — Marta repeated a little louder. — I probably shouldn’t interfere, but the southern site… it isn’t ready yet, is it?

The room instantly fell silent. David turned sharply toward her.

— Excuse me, but who are you exactly? — he said irritably. — Robert, I don’t understand what a cleaning lady has to do with our conversation.

But the director looked only at Marta.

— Wait, — he said calmly. — How do you know that?

Marta felt herself blush.

— I accidentally overheard a conversation a few days ago. The office door was open and you were saying on the phone that the project would only be ready by autumn.

She paused for a moment and then quietly added:

— I thought that maybe you didn’t know about it.

Robert slowly turned to David.

— Is that true?

David straightened up.

— She might have misunderstood. She’s not a specialist.

— David, — Robert repeated calmly, — is the site ready or not?

David opened his mouth but said nothing. One of the partners took off his glasses and looked at him carefully. After a few seconds David quietly admitted:

 

— The construction is indeed behind schedule. I was planning to solve the problem before the contract was signed.

Robert sighed heavily.

— So you wanted me to sign the contract without knowing that we wouldn’t be able to meet the conditions?

No one answered. One of the partners stood up from his seat.

— I think we should postpone the signing. First we need to clarify the deadlines.

The meeting ended. A few minutes later the guests left, and Marta remained in the room with the director.

Robert was silent for a while, then looked at her.

— You could have simply left and said nothing. Why did you decide to interfere?

Marta answered calmly:

— I came to clean the tea. But if I hear something that isn’t true and understand that it could cause a serious problem, I can’t pretend I didn’t notice it.

Marta left the meeting room, put on her gloves, and returned to her cleaning cart.

Two weeks later the contract was finally signed, but already with new deadlines and new conditions.
