“Dad, I am your son, I’m alive,” said a homeless boy to the millionaire who had come to his child’s grave; when the man stepped closer and realized what was really happening, he was seized by sheer horror 

Heavy rain was pouring when Alex stopped his black Mercedes at the gates of the cemetery. Exactly six months had passed since the day his life had ended together with the life of his son.

Six months earlier, a school bus had been involved in a terrible accident: it collided with a truck and burst into flames. None of the children survived. The parents were given only what could be found after the fire, and a coffin far too small, bearing his son’s name, was lowered into the ground.

Alex stepped out of the car, clutching a bouquet of red roses in his hands. His expensive shoes immediately sank into the mud, but he didn’t even notice. From that day on, he no longer cared how he looked or where he stepped. The only thing he did, week after week, was come here and stand by the grave, trying not to break completely.

He walked slowly along the path, as if dragging out the moment. Every step was an effort, his chest burned, and memories of the funeral kept resurfacing in his mind.

Suddenly, he noticed someone standing by the headstone. A thin boy in wet, torn clothes, leaning on a makeshift wooden crutch. His back was hunched, and his shoulders were trembling from the cold and the rain.

The boy slowly turned around and quietly spoke words that took Alex’s breath away. “Dad… it’s me. I’m alive.”

Alex froze in shock. The roses slipped from his hands and fell straight into the mud. That voice, that tone, were far too familiar, yet this was a completely different boy, nothing like his deceased son.

He took a step back and almost shouted, unable to believe that something like this could even be possible.

— This can’t be true. I saw the accident with my own eyes, I was at the funeral, and I knew that no one could have survived, — he took a deep breath, barely holding back tears, and added, — You don’t even look like my son. Why are you lying?

The boy wiped his face with his sleeve and began to speak slowly, as if recalling everything all over again. He said the accident had been horrific and that almost nothing remained in his memory.

Only fragments surfaced in his mind: screams, a violent impact, fire everywhere, and thick smoke that made it impossible to breathe. He didn’t understand when he had lost consciousness, and when he came to, he was already in the hospital.

He explained that when he woke up, his face was completely bandaged because of burns, and one leg was broken in several places. For a long time, he couldn’t get up and barely spoke. The millionaire interrupted him and asked painfully:

— Why didn’t you call, and why did no one tell me that my son was alive?

The boy lowered his eyes and quietly replied that no one knew who he was. His backpack and all his belongings had burned in the bus, no documents were left, and he himself remembered nothing.

He didn’t know his name, his address, or a phone number. The doctors registered him as an unknown child, and later he ended up in a shelter, which he simply left because he felt he had to find this place.

The father looked at him and suddenly began to notice what he had previously denied. He saw the familiar gaze, the same gesture with which the boy adjusted his shoulder, and the birthmark near the temple, impossible to mistake.

He stepped forward, dropped to his knees directly in the mud, and realized that standing before him was truly his son. The son he had buried and mourned. The son who had survived by a miracle.
