The relatives came to congratulate the parents and see the newborn baby, but after taking a look into the nursery, they rushed out of the room one by one in horror: the reason shocked everyone 

The happy day had finally arrived. The house was filled with noise and warmth. The parents had just returned from the maternity hospital and invited all their relatives to see the newborn. Grandmothers, aunts, uncles, godparents — everyone came with gifts, flowers, and congratulations.

— So where is he? — the aunt asked impatiently, taking off her coat.

— In the nursery, — the mother smiled. — Just be careful, he’s sleeping.

The grandmother was the first to go in. She leaned over the crib, looked at the baby, and suddenly straightened up sharply. Her face turned pale, her lips began to tremble.

— My God… — she whispered and hurried out of the room without saying another word.

Everyone exchanged glances but decided that the grandmother had simply felt unwell. Then the aunt went in. One second passed, then another. Suddenly, a short, frightened gasp was heard.

— No… no… — she said quietly and almost ran into the hallway, pressing her hand to her mouth.

— What’s going on? — the father asked nervously.

— What are you seeing in there? — the mother added, feeling anxiety rise inside her.

The relatives went in one after another and came out almost immediately. Some remained silent, some crossed themselves, others looked away and avoided meeting the parents’ eyes. The nursery grew quieter and quieter, while the tension in the hallway increased.

— Enough, — the mother finally said. — I’ll look myself.

She walked to the crib with trembling hands. The father stood beside her, not daring to take a step closer. The mother slowly leaned down and carefully lifted the blanket.

The mother approached the crib. Her heart was beating so loudly it seemed everyone could hear it. She leaned in and looked closely at the baby. In that moment, everything became clear.

The baby did not resemble the father at all. Not in the shape of the face, not in the line of the lips, not in the shape of the eyes. But there was another resemblance. One that sent a cold shiver down the spine.

The mother understood everything immediately.

The relatives noticed that the newborn strongly resembled the mother’s best friend, with whom she had grown up, whose family had been close to theirs, and who now had a family of his own.

And there was one more detail. On the baby’s cheek was a small birthmark. Exactly the same as the one on the mother’s best friend.

The mother slowly straightened up. Her hands were shaking, her head was buzzing. The father stepped closer, looked into the crib, and froze. He looked at the baby once more, then at the mother.

— You cheated on me, — he said in a dull voice.

Silence fell over the room. The kind of silence where nothing needs to be explained anymore. The secret that all the relatives knew had revealed itself.

And the happy day, which should have marked the beginning of a new life, turned into a moment after which nothing could ever be taken back.
