The parents abandoned their children in a remote forest, leaving them with only a little food and water, hoping they would never return home. But everything changed the moment a car stopped beside them, and someone stepped out… 

The car came to a halt in the middle of the dense taiga, and at that instant the older child’s heart clenched. All around them there was nothing but forest, cold, and silence. No houses, no roads, no people.

The stepmother who had brought them there silently took a bag of food from the trunk, set it on the ground, and didn’t even look back. The door slammed shut, the engine roared — and the car disappeared among the trees, leaving behind only tracks in the snow.

The girl couldn’t hold back and burst into tears, clutching a worn teddy bear to her chest. The older brother hugged her, even though he himself was barely holding on, trying not to show his fear. He understood one thing: now everything depended solely on him.

They moved forward along a narrow path, tripping over roots and sinking into the snow. It was cold, the food was scarce, and their strength was fading far too quickly. Somewhere in the distance, a howl echoed, freezing them with terror.

When the girl was completely exhausted, the brother lifted her onto his back and kept going, repeating that everything would be okay, even though he himself no longer believed it. The forest seemed endless and hostile, as if it were deliberately confusing them, unwilling to let them go.

The car didn’t stop right away. It drove past them at first, then braked sharply and slowly reversed. A man stepped out. Tall, tired, wearing a dark jacket. He looked at the children as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

The children instinctively pressed close to each other. Life had taught them to be afraid of any adult. The man noticed this and stopped at a distance, making no sudden movements.

“I won’t hurt you,” he said calmly. “You’re freezing.”

He took off his jacket, laid it on the snow, and stepped back, making it clear he wasn’t rushing them. Then he opened the trunk, took out a thermos and some food, and carefully placed everything beside the jacket.

The girl was trembling, the brother shielding her with his body, but the cold was stronger than fear. They took a step forward. Then another.

Inside the car, it was warm. The stranger turned on the heater and simply sat behind the wheel, asking no questions, as if afraid to break the moment.

When the children had warmed up a little, he said quietly:

“A few weeks ago, I lost my family. An accident. My wife and my two children didn’t survive.”

He spoke calmly, but his hands on the steering wheel were trembling.

“After that, I asked God every day why I was left alive at all. And today…” he glanced in the rearview mirror. “Today, it seems He answered me.”

The car slowly pulled away. And the forest was left behind — for the first time that night, no longer so frightening.
