Today I was lying down peacefully, resting, when suddenly I felt some strange lumps in my pillow. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but the longer I lay there, the more noticeable the unevenness became . I decided to check — unzipped the pillowcase and looked inside
. And inside my pillow was this… Honestly, I was horrified.
I’m going to tell you what it was and why it appeared in my pillow — and you should check your bedding too
. Details in the first comment
The pillow filling had turned into something strange — it was covered with reddish spots, looked moldy, and in some places, it seemed burnt.
To the touch, it was damp and crumbly. It felt like it wasn’t a pillow anymore, but something baked and burnt.
It turned out the pillow filling decomposed due to prolonged exposure to moisture. Over time, materials like foam or latex can react with humid air, especially if there’s no ventilation.
This leads to the growth of mold, fungus, and breakdown of the structure.
What to do to avoid this situation:
-
Regularly ventilate your room and never sleep on a damp pillow.
-
Wash pillowcases periodically and air out the pillows themselves, especially if they’re synthetic.
-
Use moisture absorbers or dehumidifiers, especially in rooms with high humidity.
-
Replace pillows every 1–2 years — especially foam ones, because they lose shape and start breaking down over time.
-
Check pillows for smells or stains — these are the first signs something’s wrong.
Now I know for sure — even a pillow can give you an unpleasant surprise if you don’t take care of it.
