The girl married an old man, she was scared so she went to bed early,

As Elena lay there, every muscle tense and every breath cautious, she was prepared for the worst. Her imagination painted vivid pictures of how the night might unfold, each scenario more daunting than the last. Yet, as the minutes passed, she realized Mr. Hugo was not making any advances. Instead, she heard the gentle rhythm of his breathing, calm and steady like his voice.

In the solitude of the night, she dared to peek over at him, expecting to find an expression that mirrored her anxiety. To her surprise, Mr. Hugo seemed at peace, as if the world outside their bedroom was a distant memory. The only movement was the subtle rise and fall of his chest. It was in that moment that Elena felt the air in the room shift. Despite her fears, there was something unexpectedly tender about how he respected her space.

As dawn peeked through the curtains, Elena woke, tangled in a dream that felt more like a question than an answer. Her heart jumped as she remembered where she was, who she was with. But then, she noticed something — Mr. Hugo was not beside her. Instead, the room carried the faint smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Curiosity pulling her from bed, she followed the inviting aroma to the kitchen. There, she found Mr. Hugo, apron-clad, setting up a modest breakfast on the small wooden table. The sight was both unexpected and bewildering. She paused, unsure of how to interpret this gesture.

“Good morning,” Mr. Hugo greeted, looking up with a soft smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes. “I hope you slept well.”

Elena nodded, her voice caught somewhere between disbelief and gratitude. She glanced around, noting the effort he had put into making the morning as comforting as possible. The table was arranged with care — two cups of coffee, freshly baked bread, slices of fruit neatly arranged on a porcelain plate.

“You… did all this?” Elena asked, her voice finally finding its way out.

“I did,” he replied, a hint of pride in his tone. “I thought you might enjoy a calm start to your day.”

She approached the table, every step an echo of uncertainty turning into curiosity. Here was a man who, despite their age difference and the transactional nature of their union, seemed to value her comfort above all else. It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes.

As they sat down to breakfast, Elena found herself relaxing, little by little. There was a kindness in Mr. Hugo’s eyes, an unspoken understanding that perhaps things could be different than she had feared. The breakfast was simple, yet it warmed her, not just by filling her stomach but by touching her heart.

In the days that followed, Elena learned more about Mr. Hugo. About his late wife whom he loved dearly, about his estranged son, about his life and his regrets. And as they unfolded their stories over shared meals and quiet evenings, Elena began to find solace in the companionship they provided one another.

What had started as a marriage born of necessity gradually evolved into something neither of them could have anticipated — a partnership not defined by age or obligation, but by mutual respect and understanding. Elena had entered the marriage with fear, but she found, much to her surprise, that she had awakened to kindness.
