During the celebration, when I brought out the dishes, my mother-in-law introduced me to the guests: “And this is my daughter-in-law, already practically an ex — my son will soon divorce her”

In the middle of the family celebration, on my mother-in-law’s anniversary, I brought out the main course with a smile on an old silver tray. For five years I had lived in that house and still hoped that one day I would truly belong there.

There was dead silence at the table. No one ate, no one drank. My mother-in-law looked at me as if she were seeing me for the first time. My husband opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words.
I picked up my bag, put on my coat, and before leaving, turned back.
