A heartfelt tribute to the bravery of Police Dog (PD) Finn is set to take shape in the form of a permanent memorial in his hometown. The courageous German shepherd, known for saving the life of his handler, PC Dave Wardell, is being remembered for his extraordinary acts of heroism.
In 2016, Finn’s remarkable loyalty and bravery were put to the ultimate test when he intervened in a dangerous confrontation with an armed suspect in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. While defending PC Wardell from a knife-wielding assailant, Finn was critically injured, and PC Wardell himself was stabbed. The attack could have been far worse, but thanks to Finn’s intervention, PC Wardell survived.
Despite being seriously wounded, Finn showed remarkable resilience and continued to work alongside his handler after his recovery. Unfortunately, after a brief period of continued service, Finn passed away in 2023 at the age of 14. His legacy, however, remains strong, and efforts are now underway to erect a permanent statue in his honor.
The memorial will be located in a park in Hertfordshire, the county where Finn spent much of his life. It is a tribute not just to Finn, but to all service animals who risk their lives in the line of duty. Finn’s story has touched the hearts of many, including Simon Cowell, who became visibly emotional during a special tribute to the police dog.
