Losing a child is every parent’s worst fear, and this is what Laura Hillier’s parents had to face. Laura was diagnosed with leukemia at 13 but was declared cured four years later, only for the illness to return.
Unfortunately, she passed away on January 20, 2016. Laura, a beloved and talented student at Nelson High School in Ontario, left surrounded by her loved ones. Her family announced her death via a Facebook page dedicated to her fight against leukemia, praising her courage and strength.
To honor her, her friends and teachers did something special: they covered her coffin with messages of love, similar to what is done in yearbooks. Laura, who was passionate about music and theater, was deeply loved. Her classmates, teachers, neighbors, and even the medical staff wrote heartfelt messages on her coffin, expressing their sorrow and admiration. One message read: “You were musical and artistic. My best friend.” Another added: “Brave and strong, you will always be a hero.”
Purple, her favorite color, was everywhere at the funeral, symbolizing the love from her community. Although she left far too soon, the affection and support she received provided some comfort to her family.
