Sometimes you might notice a small black spot in the corner of a wall. At first, it seems insignificant — like dirt or dust. But over time, it grows, darkens, and may start to smell musty.
This could be a sign of a more serious issue inside the walls. No need to panic, but you shouldn’t ignore it either. The key is to act in time to stop it from spreading and to restore a healthy environment in your home.
What causes such black spots? Most often, it’s high humidity. Moisture builds up in poorly ventilated spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, or bedrooms with little airflow.
When moist air meets cold walls, condensation forms — an ideal environment for mold growth.
It can also be caused by external leaks (like from a damaged roof or gutter) or moisture rising from the foundation. Poor insulation plays a role too, creating cold spots where moisture easily settles.
Another commonly overlooked factor is furniture placement. When wardrobes or sofas are pressed tightly against walls, air can’t circulate behind them — creating a breeding ground for mold.
If you see a dark spot — act immediately. Start by airing out your home regularly in the morning and evening — even during winter. This helps reduce humidity.
Surface stains can be cleaned with a solution of vinegar and warm water. For more stubborn spots, hydrogen peroxide works well.
Important: don’t use vinegar on natural stone surfaces, as it can cause damage. Also, move your furniture a few centimeters away from the walls.
If the moisture problem persists — consider using a dehumidifier or moisture absorber.
