Of course, it is the illustrious singer Édith Piaf, whose touching story continues to captivate audiences.

Many anecdotes surround the well-known Parisian diva, particularly the one claiming that she was born on the street, precisely on the steps of number 72 in a building in the popular Belleville district.

At birth, she was given the name Édith Giovanna Gassion. Her father, a circus acrobat, and her mother, a street singer, were unable to provide her with a stable childhood.

After her father was mobilized shortly after her birth, her mother, unable to take care of her, entrusted her to her maternal grandmother, a Berber Moroccan, who looked after her until she was eighteen months old.

Throughout her life, Édith Piaf experienced numerous passionate love affairs, which she did not hesitate to end as soon as the flame died out. At just 16 years old, she met Louis Dupont, a young courier one year older than her. From this relationship, a daughter named Marcelle was born.

However, motherhood was a painful ordeal for Édith, who tragically lost her child. She would never again experience the joy of being a mother. At 20, her fate took a decisive turn when she was noticed by Louis Leplée, the owner of the Gerny’s nightclub.

This man became her mentor, teaching her the art of performing, the importance of dressing elegantly, and the mastery of gestures and facial expressions.

He was the one who gave her the famous stage name “Piaf,” meaning “sparrow” in slang, due to her small stature—only 1.42 meters tall. The posters of the time featured her as “La Môme Piaf,” marking the beginning of her meteoric rise.

During a tour in the United States, Édith crossed paths with the French boxer Marcel Cerdan, who became the love of her life. However, their romance was overshadowed by a major obstacle: Cerdan was married and the father of three children. Torn between his family duties and his passion for the singer, he rushed to her at every call. This devotion tragically cost him his life.

Their relationship, which began in 1948, came to a brutal end on October 28, 1949, when Marcel Cerdan died in a plane crash while traveling to New York to join Édith.

Devastated by this loss, Édith withdrew from the world, sinking into deep sorrow. Her health deteriorated, forcing her to make frequent hospital visits. It was in this context that she met Théo Sarapo, a handsome young man twenty years her junior.

One day, he brought her a doll, a gesture that marked the beginning of their relationship. A week after this visit, he proposed to Piaf. Later, the singer confided: “I truly loved only one man, Marcel Cerdan. But all my life, I waited for Théo Sarapo.”
