My mother-in-law had her anniversary – 60 years. A big celebration, all the relatives were invited. A week before the event, she called me asking for help with the cooking.
— Of course, if I’m free. What date are you planning? — I replied.
— Next Friday, — my mother-in-law said hopefully.
— I’m busy on Friday, I have a shift at work.
— No problem! We’ll cook on Thursday! — she said cheerfully. — And the fact that you won’t be there on Friday is actually good. We’ll spend less on food.
That’s when I felt it was too much. I was so upset with my mother-in-law that I decided to take revenge and ruin the celebration she didn’t even want to invite me to. Here’s what I did.

On Thursday, I came to help. We cooked together: salads, main dishes, appetizers, desserts. Everything as it should be. Only… I made my small adjustments.
It wasn’t poison, of course, but enough to make the result surprising: in the sweet pie — salt, in the salad — vinegar instead of oil, and in the meat I added so much pepper that my eyes were watering.
On Friday, I came just an hour before my shift started. The guests were already gathering, the table was overflowing with dishes. My mother-in-law was glowing. And then I stood up, took a glass, and said:
— Dear relatives! Let’s raise a toast to the birthday girl! For how smart and wonderful she is! Everything on the table today, she cooked it! All by herself!
The guests clapped. My mother-in-law blushed with pride.
Then they began tasting the food.
The first to cough was my mother-in-law’s brother, taking a bite of the meat. Then her sister grimaced while tasting the salad. The pie with the salty taste brought it to its climax.
— Mmm… original, — someone said, not knowing how to politely express their shock.
— Probably a new recipe? — another added.
My mother-in-law stayed silent, as if frozen. I stood up, smiled, and said:
— Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to refuse my help…
And went off to my shift.
