Bruce Willis’ wife has offered an update following speculation that her husband can ‘no longer speak or walk.’
Emma Heming Willis has issued a strong statement addressing recent media reports about her husband’s health condition, following news of the actor’s battle with frontotemporal dementia.
Bruce stepped away from acting in March 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects communication abilities, including speaking, understanding, reading, and writing.
A year later, in February 2023, his family announced that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a degenerative brain disease that primarily affects behavior, personality, and language rather than memory.
Frontotemporal dementia is the most common type of dementia in people under 60, typically beginning around age 58, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, FTD doesn’t primarily manifest as memory problems but instead affects how people behave, interact with others, and communicate.
he most recent official family update came in December 2024, when Bruce’s ex-wife Demi Moore appeared on CNN and described his condition as ‘stable.’
“He’s in a very stable place at the moment,” Moore said. “I’ve shared this before, but I really mean this so sincerely — it’s so important for anybody who’s dealing with this to really meet them where they’re at.”
Bruce’s daughter Tallulah Willis has also provided glimpses into their family’s experience.
Speaking on Today in September 2024, she said: “He’s doing stable, which, in this situation, is good and is hard. There’s painful days, but there’s so much love.”
Emma has been open about the challenges of caregiving, describing dementia as ‘hard on the person diagnosed’ and ‘hard on the family.’
She has noted the difficulty in knowing how much Bruce is aware of his condition, saying, ‘It’s hard to know’ when asked about his awareness.
The family has embraced a philosophy common among those dealing with FTD: “It is what it is.”
As Emma explained, while these words might sound harsh, they help her ‘return to the acceptance of what is and not fight this every step of the way.’
The first signs of Bruce’s condition appeared as changes in his speech patterns. Emma initially attributed these changes to his childhood stutter, never imagining they could be symptoms of dementia in someone so young.
“As his language started changing, it (seemed like it) was just a part of a stutter, it was just Bruce. Never in a million years would I think it would be a form of dementia for someone so young,” she told Town & Country in October 2024.
Daughter Tallulah described the early symptoms as ‘a vague unresponsiveness,’ which the family initially attributed to Hollywood hearing loss from his action movie roles.
Despite the challenges, the Willis family continues to celebrate important moments together.
Bruce celebrated his 70th birthday in March 2025 surrounded by his daughters, granddaughter, ex-wife Demi Moore, and wife Emma.
The family regularly shares photos and memories, showing their commitment to cherishing the present moments.
For Father’s Day 2024, Emma posted a tribute highlighting Bruce’s continued impact on their daughters: “What Bruce teaches our girls goes far beyond words. Resilience, unconditional love, and the quiet strength in simply being present.”
In a pointed message posted to her Instagram Stories on July 26, 2025, Emma directly addressed the circulation of unconfirmed reports about her husband’s declining health.
“To Whom It May Concern: If you ever come across a story that begins with ‘sources close to the family say…,’ do yourself a favor and stop reading,” she wrote.
“And to any outlet that runs with those kinds of stories, do better. Giving a platform to anonymous speculation is not only careless, it’s harmful. Onward.”
The statement came in response to recent media reports claiming that the 70-year-old Die Hard star can no longer speak or walk, assertions that his wife clearly considers to be harmful speculation rather than verified information.
