Thomas stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his tie, when Emma entered the room.
— “How do I look?” he asked with a slight smile, not taking his eyes off his reflection.
— “Very elegant. You look great,” she replied cautiously.

— “I always do,” Thomas replied proudly. “And you, are you ready for dinner?”
— “Of course. I made your favorite dish — pasta and a fresh salad.”

During the meal, Thomas noticed that Emma was barely eating.
— “Why aren’t you eating?”
— “I’m not really hungry,” she shrugged.

— “Maybe it’s for the best. You need to watch your figure. You know a director’s wife must look presentable. And you… you’re not like you used to be.”

Emma felt her heart tighten but stayed silent. She knew arguing with him led nowhere.
— “By the way, I’ll go to the party alone,” he added casually.
— “But you said you’d take me this time…”
— “I changed my mind. I’ll say you’re tired. Honestly, it’s easier without you. You’re too clumsy.”

Without another word, Emma left the table and went to another room. Watching the children play in the garden, she realized how much her life had changed. She once dreamed of a big family, a house full of laughter. But Thomas always found a reason to delay it — career first, then money…

A week later, Emma attended a job interview incognito at a large company. She hadn’t expected to end up at the same company as Thomas — yet she was hired.

On the evening of the event, Thomas was choosing his tie, hoping Emma would tell him which one looked best. But she simply said:
— “You should quit smoking. You look pale.”

He stayed silent. This wasn’t the usual Emma who always supported him.
— “What’s wrong with you?” he asked, annoyed.
— “I’m finally living for myself,” she replied simply.

Then, on stage, the host announced:
— “Let’s welcome our new department head: Emma Larsen!”

Thomas was speechless. His wife, elegant in her navy dress, walked confidently onto the stage.
— “What are you doing here?” he spat later in the hallway.
— “Thomas, you no longer have a say in my life,” she said calmly. “I’ve filed for divorce. Now go live your life.”

— “All because of this job?”
— “No. I just realized I don’t need to stay with someone who doesn’t respect me. And in case you forgot: I’m your superior now.”

Thomas stood frozen as Emma returned to the party, surrounded by admiring colleagues. That evening, she knew what it meant to be heard, respected, and free.
