My mother-in-law demanded that I leave my own home during the birthday party I had organized for her; I had no idea how big of a mistake I had made.

I pulled the phone out of my pocket and pressed “play.”
The hidden camera inside my mother’s brooch — a gift I had given her — had recorded everything: every word, every insult, every command.

Robert turned red instantly.
— “W-What… what is this?” he stammered, reaching for the phone.
— “It’s proof that you’re not the man you pretend to be. And in case you’re wondering, I’ve already sent everything to the lawyer.”

I looked him straight in the eye.
— “So, dear Robert, either you leave on your own, or we’ll take legal action. And by the way… I believe my mother has a few dresses perfect for a day in court.”

My mother lifted her head for the first time and gave a faint smile.
Then, without saying a word, she pulled the old suitcase from the closet and started packing.
For herself.
This time, in the right direction.
