The courtroom fell into absolute silence.
Everyone present — lawyers, jurors, journalists, spectators — remained frozen, mute with emotion. The tension was palpable in the air.
The judge, dressed in his black robe, addressed the accused calmly:
— “Alex Miller, former police officer. The court finds you guilty of abuse of power…”
The words echoed dully, indistinctly, in the room. Alex rose, head bowed, heart heavy. His fists were clenched, his lips pressed tight. He did not protest, did not try to defend himself. He wanted only one thing: to say “goodbye” one last time.
— “Your Honor,” he finally murmured, “I have no family, no close ones. But I had a faithful friend. Allow me to say goodbye… to my dog, Rex.”

A soft murmur spread through the courtroom. It was not a plea for pity, but a profoundly human impulse. The judge exchanged a glance with the prosecutor. The latter slowly nodded.
A few minutes later, the door opened and a German Shepherd walked in with steady steps. It was Rex.
The dog advanced calmly, as if aware of the place. His gaze was full of expression — neither aggressive nor fearful, but marked with wisdom. As soon as he saw Alex, he let out a deep sigh and rushed toward him.
Alex knelt down and embraced him, stroking his fur gently. Tears welled up in his eyes.
— “Excuse me, Rex… I abandoned you. I failed to protect us. But you… you were always there. Even when everyone turned their back on me.”

The scene was heartbreaking. Some jurors shivered, moved to tears. Then something unexpected happened…
Rex suddenly lifted his head and, without looking at Alex, walked toward a man at the back of the room — another police officer. It was Oliver, Alex’s former partner, whose testimony had been crucial in the trial.
The dog approached slowly, then began sniffing the breast pocket of Oliver’s uniform insistently.
Everyone held their breath. Even the judge leaned forward.
— “What is happening?” he asked softly.
Stunned, Oliver stepped back, until a security officer politely invited him to stay. He then pulled a small USB stick from his pocket.
The judge frowned.
— “Please connect it to the computer.”
A few seconds later, videos appeared on the screen. They showed people counting money, copying documents, or discussing shady operations. One of the voices, cruelly familiar, was recognized by Alex…
Then it was heard clearly:
— “Don’t worry. We’ll pin everything on Miller. He won’t say a word. He always keeps his mouth shut.”
A deadly silence followed. The judge looked at the prosecutor, who stared at the officers present.

— “Court is adjourned. We must examine this new evidence. Mr. Miller, your conviction is temporarily annulled. And, please… reward this dog.”
A silent thunder of applause rose in the courtroom. It was not a victory, but a great sigh of relief. Justice had not yet been served, but hope was reborn.
Alex, still on his knees, seemed overwhelmed. Rex returned to him and gently rested his head against his cheek.
— “You saved me… as always,” Alex whispered. “You always knew whom to trust…”
