As I carried my baby home, an old woman grabbed my arm. “Don’t go inside—call

My heart slammed against my ribs, the weight of his words nearly knocking the breath out of me. An explosive device? My mind reeled, struggling to comprehend the nightmare twisting around me. Who would want to harm me and my newborn? I looked down at Mikey, who blinked up at me with innocent curiosity, blissfully unaware of the peril shadowing him.

“Who?” I asked, my voice a whisper, the question slipping out before I could stop myself. “Who would do this?”

“Not over the phone, sweetheart,” Dad replied, his voice tight, as though sharing the burden of this knowledge was physically painful. “Just keep yourself and Mikey safe until I get there. Promise me.”

“I promise,” I murmured, tears welling in my eyes. It felt surreal, hearing his voice again, full of love and concern, when I had resigned myself to a future without it. The years of missing him, of longing for one more conversation, rushed back with brutal force. Yet, the fear outweighed the joy of this impossible reunion.

The old woman was still standing beside me, watching with a knowing gaze that seemed to pierce into the depths of my soul. “Thank you,” I said, my voice shaking as I ended the call.

She gave a small nod. “Stay here with your baby. I’ll keep watch.”

I sank onto the bench, clutching Mikey to my chest, the minutes dragging by in a haze of anxiety and disbelief. Each passing moment felt like a lifetime, the anticipation of seeing my father again mingling with the dread of the unknown threat lurking within the walls of my home.

Finally, a black car pulled up at the curb. The door swung open, and my father stepped out, looking older, wearier, but undeniably real. My heart leapt as I rose to meet him, tears spilling over.

“Dad,” I choked, taking in every detail of his face to reassure myself that he was truly there.

He embraced us both, his arms wrapping around me and Mikey protectively. “Oh, Natalie, I’m so sorry,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I never wanted to leave you like that.”

We pulled apart, and he held me at arm’s length, scrutinizing me with those familiar, reassuring eyes. “You’re safe now,” he said, though the tremor in his voice hinted at the enormity of what we’d narrowly escaped.

Together, we retreated to a nearby café, where he promised to explain everything. But for now, it was enough to be together, to know that I wasn’t alone in this terrifying new reality.

As we sat, sipping coffee and watching Mikey sleep, the old woman stood guard outside, her silhouette a steadfast reminder of the strange events that had unfolded. Though my world had turned upside down in the span of an afternoon, I had my family by my side—both the one I was raising and the one I thought I had lost. And for now, that was enough to keep the fear at bay.
